Validation

The validation button in the editor header checks the compiled document against a schema:

• TEI P5 — the tei_all schema;
• MENOTA P5 — the MENOTA RelaxNG schema.

Errors are listed with their line numbers where available.

When to validate

Run a validation:

• before exporting an edition for publication or deposit;
• after changing a template, since the surrounding markup is part of the document;
• after importing a TEI file, especially if you edited its structure;
• when a downstream tool rejects a file that Saga-Scribe exported without complaint.

Validation and export

Validation is separate from export. Exporting is refused while the shorthand contains errors, because a failed compile cannot produce a complete document. A document can, however, compile successfully and still fail schema validation — for example if a template adds an element that the chosen schema does not allow, or a required attribute is missing.

Note

Validation reports schema problems in the compiled document; it is not a check of editorial correctness. A document may be valid TEI and still encode the manuscript wrongly.
