Templates
A template supplies the parts of the TEI document around the transcription — the header and the closing tags — and decides how the transcription is encoded. The template in use is chosen in the toolbar. Templates are managed with the template button in the editor header.
Built-in templates
Section titled “Built-in templates”Two templates are built in:
- TEI P5: a TEI P5 document with a minimal header.
- Menota: a document following the MENOTA handbook, with the MENOTA namespace and entity declarations, and the three transcription levels enabled.
Built-in templates cannot be changed. Their edit button creates a copy that can be changed.
Options
Section titled “Options”Each template has three options:
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Word wrapping | Each word is wrapped in <w>, punctuation in <pc>. Required for lemmatization and annotations. |
| Auto line numbers | Line breaks without a number (//) are numbered consecutively. |
| Multi-level (MENOTA) | Each word contains <me:facs>, <me:dipl> and <me:norm>. See MENOTA levels. |
Word wrapping matters beyond appearance: words are what lemmatization and annotations attach to. If a document was compiled without word wrapping, its words cannot be clicked in the preview.
Creating a template
Section titled “Creating a template”Click + New Template, then enter:
- a name and description;
- the XML before the transcription, up to and including
<body>; - the XML after the transcription;
- the three options above.
Any template can be duplicated. Your own templates can be edited and deleted; built-in templates are read-only.
The header a template supplies is a starting point. Document-specific information is
better entered in the metadata editor, which writes into the
<teiHeader> and is saved with the project.
Choosing a default
Section titled “Choosing a default”The template used for new projects is set in Settings. Choosing a template in the toolbar changes the current document; it does not change the default.
